Guidance

 The school counselor works with students, school staff and families to promote school success through academic achievement, prevention and intervention activities, advocacy and social/emotional and career development.  Students are counseled individually or in small groups to improve social skills and interpersonal relationships, grieve a loss or separation, learn coping skills for difficult situations and for crisis intervention.  Students can refer themselves to the counselor.  They can also be referred by a parent or school staff.  Every child in grades three through five who make a D or F on their report card is seen by the counselor individually for academic counseling.  A plan for improvement (Plan for a Better Journey - PB&J) is developed by the counselor and student and a copy of the plan is sent home.  The counselor maintains records of student’s achievement.  The counselor also maintains records of transfer students, records of court and custody and helps to update emergency information. 

 

     Classes are taught in grades K through five by the counselor to improve academic and testing skills, help children understand others, improve communication skills and learn to cooperate and solve problems together.  Teacher input is given to help decide topics.  Children learn to deal with bullying, explore the six pillars of character in the Character Counts! Program, practice dealing with anger, review organizational skills, connect school skills with job skills and learn personal body safety.  The counselor keeps visible and connects with students by teaching these classes and by being involved in other school activities such as teaching after school remediation, co-directing the Stewartsville Ensemble, assisting with special activities and programs, judging the spelling bee, coordinating the talent show, helping with Career Day, and running various character activities.  The school staff consults with the counselor to plan academic and social progress for individual students and classes.  Concerns about child safety are brought to the counselor and referrals are made to appropriate agencies.  The counselor connects with parents through consultations and parent letters, being involved in PTA, speaking at kindergarten orientation, serving on the School Consultation Committee, and connecting parents with needed resources in the community.
